Netflix has announced that it will be discontinuing its DVD rental service after 25 years of operation.
Co-chief executive Ted Sarandos revealed that the final discs will be shipped on September 29th. While many may not be aware, the streaming giant initially launched in 1997 as a DVD rental service, providing subscribers with an alternative to traditional video rental stores. In fact, the first DVD ever shipped by Netflix was the Tim Burton classic, Beetlejuice, in 1998.
However, the company made a strategic shift to streaming in 2007, which has since become its primary source of revenue.
