Could you care?

Currently, there is a high demand for trustworthy and dependable carers, facilitators, and personal assistants. The situation is dire, and many individuals are in need of assistance. If you are considering this line of work, it is commendable, and you will be welcomed with open arms. However, it is important to remember that this job is more than just a job.

As a carer, you are providing someone with a support and enabling them to live their best possible life. For individuals with disabilities, a significant amount of time is spent planning and arranging daily activities, such as scheduling medical appointments and coordinating social events around their care hours. By taking on this role, you are not only providing practical assistance but also emotional support and companionship.

It is a rewarding and fulfilling job, but it requires dedication, patience, and empathy. You must be willing to go above and beyond to ensure the well-being and happiness of the person you are caring for. If you possess these qualities, then this job may be the perfect fit for you.

The positive benefits of this job go both ways, as you may well (depending on your employers circumstances and interests) get to go on holidays with them, while working, that you might not otherwise have been able to experience. Or they may love going to the theatre or concerts, and take you along as their companion/PA. These are just two examples, but be open to new experiences and enjoy sharing them.

Some aspects of the job may be hardwork, but a lot of it can be great fun too.

Thriving in the Digital Age: The Benefits of Positive Technology Engagement

Daily writing prompt
How has technology changed your job?

I volunteer, and this involves helping at a group for those with dementia, and other memory issues. We use all sorts of things to help bring memories to life, and as props when we reminisce.

Advertisements

One big thing that makes a difference is being able to add the modern technology available, alongside day to day items such as newspapers, magazines, board games, exercises, and singing etc….

An example of a piece of technology we use for group interaction is what’s known as ‘the magic table’. Think of a giant screen which is interactive like a touchscreen tablet would be, but it’s actually images projected onto a table top, or the floor. The Magic table has all sorts of different activities, from playing football, adding splashes of colour to a blank canvas (the table top), and also other interactive puzzles and games. These are aimed at different levels of ability and concentration.

The Magic Table is a versatile tool that can be utilised both individually and in group settings. Its unique design promotes social interaction, encourages physical movement, and fosters moments of joy and happiness. The Magic Table is an excellent resource for enhancing overall well-being and quality of life.

Spring Sale.

Once upon a time, in a small town nestled in the rolling hills of the countryside, the arrival of spring was always a cause for celebration. The snow melted away, the flowers bloomed, and the air was filled with the sweet scent of new beginnings. And what better way to celebrate than with a spring sale?

The local shopkeepers would dust off their shelves and fill them with all sorts of treasures, from handmade crafts to freshly baked goods. The streets would be alive with the sound of laughter and chatter as people wandered from store to store, searching for the perfect bargain.

But the real magic of the spring sale was in the air. It was a time when anything was possible, when dreams could come true and new beginnings were just around the corner. And as the sun set on the first day of the sale, the town was filled with a sense of hope and possibility that would carry them through the rest of the season.

Hide & Seek.

Once upon a time, there was a young boy named Tim who loved to play hide and seek. He was so good at it that sometimes he would hide for hours and no one could find him. One day, Tim’s family was moving to a new home and they were in a hurry to leave. They called out to Tim, “Tim, where are you? Stop hiding, we have to go now. New home!”

But there was no answer. Tim’s family searched high and low, but they couldn’t find him anywhere. They looked under the bed, in the closet, and even in the backyard, but Tim was nowhere to be found. They started to worry that they would have to leave without him.

Just as they were about to give up, they heard a faint giggle coming from behind the curtains. They pulled back the fabric to reveal Tim, curled up in a ball, trying to stifle his laughter. “Gotcha!” he exclaimed, grinning from ear to ear.

His family breathed a sigh of relief and scolded him for hiding when they were in such a hurry. But Tim just shrugged and said, “I couldn’t resist one last game of hide and seek in our old home.”

They all laughed and hugged each other, happy to be together and ready for their new adventure in their new home. Tim promised to be more responsible and not hide when they needed to leave in a hurry.

As they drove away, Tim looked out the window and waved goodbye to his old home. He was excited to explore his new surroundings and make new memories with his family. And who knows, maybe he would even find some new hiding spots to challenge his family to a game of hide and seek in their new home.

Technology v Attitudes.

Advertisements

The advancements in technology have undoubtedly improved the lives of people with disabilities in countless ways. However, despite these improvements, the physical world remains largely inaccessible to many individuals with disabilities. This is often due to the actions of people rather than nature itself. While we have created incredible forms of transportation with a wealth of knowledge and skill, most are not wheelchair accessible. Although trains can be made accessible, we still rely on the goodwill of others to deploy ramps and leave wheelchair spaces free for those who need them. Additionally, cafes and restaurants often fail to provide enough space for individuals with visual or mobility issues to manoeuvre around comfortably. Stores continue to use lights that flicker, causing discomfort for those with sensory conditions such as autism. These are just a few examples of the many challenges that individuals with disabilities face on a daily basis.

It is clear that attitudes need to catch up with the significant technological advancements we have made. Only then will we be able to create a truly inclusive world for all. By recognising and addressing the barriers that exist in the physical world, we can work towards creating a more accessible and accommodating environment for everyone. It is our responsibility to ensure that individuals with disabilities are not left behind in the wake of technological progress. By doing so, we can create a world that is truly inclusive and welcoming to all.

World Theatre Day.

Advertisements

As an avid theatre-goer, I firmly believe that the magic of the stage is something that everyone should have the opportunity to experience and enjoy. There’s nothing quite like the thrill of watching a live performance unfold before your eyes, and I feel incredibly fortunate to have seen a variety of shows at various theatres throughout England.

From the toe-tapping tunes of Mamma Mia to the dramatic storytelling of Evita, and the whimsical adventures of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and the Pirates of Penzance, I’ve been captivated by the range of performances on offer.

Photo by Malik Talha on Pexels.com

Of course, as someone with specific access requirements, I do need to ensure that the theatre I’m attending is wheelchair accessible and has an accessible loo. Additionally, as a shorter individual, I also need to have a clear viewing point – even with my chair’s seat raised slightly higher than the average theatre seating.

It’s important to note that everyone’s access requirements may differ. Some may require a hearing loop, signed performances, or audio descriptions. Regardless of these needs, I firmly believe that the theatre should be a welcoming and inclusive space for all.
