Encouraging dialogue and community building among members can help build a supportive and engaged community.

1. Can anyone start a Facebook group?

Yes, anyone with a Facebook account can start a group. It’s free and relatively easy to set up.

2. How many members should I aim for when starting a group?

There’s no magic number, but it’s important to focus on quality over quantity when building a Facebook group. You should aim to attract and engage members who are genuinely interested in your group’s topic or purpose.

3. How often should I post in my Facebook group?

Consistency is key when it comes to posting in your Facebook group. You should aim to post at least once a week, but ideally, you should aim for 2-3 posts per week. However, the frequency of your posts should depend on the nature and needs of your group.

4. Should I allow anyone to join my Facebook group?

It’s ultimately up to you to decide who can join your Facebook group. However, if your group is focused on a specific niche or topic, it may make sense to limit membership to those who are genuinely interested. You can also choose to screen potential members by asking them a few questions before admitting them to the group.

We’ve all experienced that heart-stopping moment when we lose sight of the person we’re with. Maybe they’ve wandered down the next aisle in the store or disappeared behind a statue. Even if it’s just for a split second, it can be terrifying. Now, imagine if that person is a child or a vulnerable adult.

Our natural reaction would be to call out their name while frantically searching the area. However, simply calling out their name may not be enough. Other people in the area may not know what the person looks like, making it difficult for them to assist in the search. This is where “Looking Loudly” comes in.

Looking Loudly is the act of repeatedly calling out a description of the person rather than their name. By providing a detailed description, you enable others to actively help with the search. For example, calling out “fair-haired girl wearing blue jeans, pink unicorn top, and sparkly boots” is much more informative than simply calling out a name.

Not only does Looking Loudly increase the chances of finding the missing person quickly, but it also gets others involved in the search. So, the next time you find yourself in a situation where you can’t locate the person you’re with, remember to Look Loudly and provide a detailed description. It could make all the difference.

What is paying it forward?

Pay it forward is a brilliant, yet simple idea that possesses the power to inspire countless acts of kindness and generosity. At its core, this concept is about individuals taking personal responsibility for making our world a better place, one small act at a time. It encourages us to continuously seek ways to spread love and positivity through selfless acts of giving back to our community.

Paying it forward means giving someone a helping hand. Once you receive this, you give others a helping hand. Whether that be physically helping them, giving them something, or helping in a different way.

The beauty of the Pay it forward philosophy lies in its ability to create a ripple effect of goodness throughout society, sparking an infinite chain reaction of kindness that can change lives forever.

It reminds us that sometimes the smallest gestures can have a profound impact on those around us, and that with compassion, empathy, and determination- anything is possible. When we embrace the Pay it forward mentality wholeheartedly, we are reminded of the incredible potential that humanity has for good in this world.

Some cafes/food places allow you to pay it forward, this lets you pay an amount which is then used to purchase a drink or meal for someone else who comes in later and is unable to afford to buy this for themselves.

Another good way to pay it forward is to give unwanted items (either in person, or online) which are in good condition. I’ve done this via Facebook in the past with some items, and just asked that when the recipient has finished with the item (usually kids stuff), that they too pass it on for free.

Making a Difference: How to Enhance Your Community

Daily writing prompt
How would you improve your community?

One of the most effective ways to improve the local community is by asking the local population what they want and need. By doing so, we can identify the areas that require attention and work towards making a positive change.

For instance, while there are several local play areas, most of them are not inclusive. As a result, children of different ages and abilities are unable to engage with each other, creating an invisible divide. To address this issue, I would strive to make these play areas more inclusive, ensuring that all children can use them and interact meaningfully with each other.

In addition, I would encourage local businesses, schools, and clubs to instil community values across all ages. This would help foster a sense of pride in the area and its people, encouraging everyone to look after each other and the community as a whole.

By working together, I believe that the community can demand better infrastructure, such as improved road and pavement conditions, more doctors and dentists, and even a swimming pool and cinema. These amenities would not only improve the quality of life for residents but also attract more visitors to the area.

To support local businesses, I would propose reducing commercial rent for a set period and providing assistance to new businesses applying for grants. This would help prevent empty buildings on the high street and elsewhere, benefiting both landlords and the community.

Overall, by listening to the needs of the community and working together, we can create a more inclusive, vibrant, and prosperous local community.

The Silver Lining: How Covid Forced Us to Adapt and Improve

Daily writing prompt
How have you adapted to the changes brought on by the Covid-19 pandemic?

The Covid-19 pandemic has brought about a significant change in our lives. We have had to adapt to new norms such as wearing masks, social distancing, and limiting our activities including work, family, and education. While everyone has their own thoughts on the matter, I would like to share my personal experience and how it has affected me.

As a volunteer, I was disheartened when the organisation I worked with had to close its doors due to the pandemic. However, I quickly adjusted to the new normal.

The teenager had the new experience of online learning, and people found ways to break up the monotony of day-to-day life. Although we couldn’t go out to eat, we supported local food businesses by ordering deliveries, which were a real treat.

Wearing a mask was not a big issue for me, but it did pose a challenge when communicating with others as I am deaf and rely on lip-reading. Despite this, I remained positive and grateful for the essential workers who continued to serve the nation during this time. From NHS staff to teachers, carers, shop staff, and refuse collectors, they all deserve our heartfelt thanks.

One wonderful thing to come out of it, is that I do feel that despite people having to keep social distancing and not being able to spend time together in person, this experience has brought communities closer together, and I hope this will be a positive lasting legacy of the pandemic.

The pandemic also made me realise how much I used to rush around before it hit. I have since slowed down and appreciated the little things in life. While it was strange to be so limited in what we could do and where we could go, I have adjusted to this new way of life. However, I am looking forward to exploring more now that things seem to have settled down. I hope that we won’t see a resurgence of the virus and that everyone stays safe and well.

Are you excited for the upcoming Coronation of King Charles? If so, why not organize a street party for your neighbors and residents? It’s a simple process that doesn’t require a license, but your local council may require you to fill out a straightforward application form. To find your council, simply enter your postcode on the “find your local council” website.

To ensure a successful party, it’s essential to plan early and delegate tasks among residents. If you need a temporary road closure, contact your council at least six weeks in advance. You can reach out to the council’s highways, licensing, events, or communities team for assistance. If you encounter any difficulties, don’t hesitate to speak to your local councillor, who will be happy to help.

For more helpful tips, advice, and support, check out The Big Lunch and Street Party websites. You can even request a free Big Lunch pack for organizers. Additionally, councils can find further information on the Local Government Association website.

Let’s make the Coronation of King Charles a memorable event for everyone in the community!

I am not shocked by bad language but…..

I’m not shocked by the occasional swear word in a conversation, or when a person is hurt or in shock.

What I don’t understand is the need to add these words all the time, and on to things like mugs, t-shirts, etc…. just for the sake of it because its thought funny or clever.

Kids will come across these words naturally, why should they be surrounded by them all the time? They always used to be saved for when appropriate, but now they are just thrown liberally into any type of conversation. Why?

Is this due to a general lack of vocabulary knowledge, and people don’t know there are many other more words that they could use jn those situations?

Is it just that people consider them impressive and clever to use?

Core values of respect and responsibility also apply to how we speak with/to others, as well as how we treat each other. I, like you, use swear words. I do try to take the individual situation into account as much as possible. No, I don’t always get it right, but we can all try.

Cost of food, and not wanting people to know you’re struggling – or determined to pay your way.

Ok so by now most people are aware that foodbanks exist, I wish there wasn’t a need for them, but many are in need, and they help so much. Also many Churches will help if you’re in a tight spot and need a bit of extra support.

But, there are others who are struggling just as much but are too embarrassed to use food banks, or have been brought up to always pay their way whatever the circumstances. Only the other day I was party to a conversation on this subject. Someone was talking about a place that provides free food – not a foodbank, but the food is provided for nothing. I had to explain that these kinds of places are available for absolutely anyone to use as often as they wish, they are available across the country (UK) run by various people independently and purely with the intention of reducing food wastage.

The food is perfectly safe to eat, but is often short dated, or on the last day where it cold have been sold, so stores donate it to reduce the amount thrown away. Also some people who grow their own produce and have a surplus supply give some to these places – often called community fridges, or pantry’s. If you are interested in these either for an environmental or financial point of view, please please make some enquiries in your local area and find out what’s  available. You could even come back and leave a comment if you find and use one near you.
